Cape Coral is surrounded by water and canals, but it is not located directly on a classic Gulf beach. Within Cape Coral itself, Yacht Club Beach offers a small sandy beach along the Caloosahatchee River. For wide Gulf beaches, shelling, and long walks along the shoreline, you’ll want to head to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Springs, Lovers Key, or a little farther south to Naples and Marco Island — or north to Boca Grande.

That variety is one of the biggest advantages of staying in Cape Coral: you don’t have to choose just one beach for your entire vacation.

Want to get to the water quickly today? Go shelling on Sanibel tomorrow morning? Spend another day at a quiet nature beach, take your dog to the water, or rent a boat and visit Cayo Costa?

This guide helps you find the right beach for your day trip from Cape Coral.

The driving-time categories are based approximately on South Cape Coral, such as the Cape Harbour or Yacht Club area. They are intentionally not exact minute-by-minute estimates. Traffic, seasonal congestion, bridges, construction, and the exact location of your vacation home can significantly affect travel times. Captiva, Boca Grande, and Marco Island in particular can take considerably longer during busy periods.

Staying in a Cape Coral vacation home? Cape Coral makes an excellent home base for exploring a wide variety of beaches throughout Southwest Florida.

Updated September 9, 2026: Several public beach parks in Southwest Florida are still undergoing hurricane-related rebuilding and restoration. Parking, public facilities, and access conditions may change.

Beach Filters

Use the filters to choose beaches by drive time, region, kind of day, and amenities. A beach can, of course, fit more than one category.

Very Close: Cape Coral. Close: Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Causeway. Moderate: Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Beach, and Lovers Key. Farther: Boca Grande, Naples, and Marco Island. Boat Only: islands without road access. Gulf Beach identifies beaches located directly on the Gulf shoreline rather than places such as Yacht Club Beach on the Caloosahatchee River or the Sanibel Causeway Beaches. Free parking currently matches Dog Beach; Bonita Beach Accesses #2–9 are also free.

Beaches Near Cape Coral in Detail

Very CloseCape CoralRiver

Yacht Club Beach

5819 Driftwood Pkwy, Cape Coral, FL

View Yacht Club Beach on Google Maps

Yacht Club Beach is the most convenient option if you want to get to the water without driving all the way to the barrier islands.

It is important to have the right expectations: this small sandy beach is located on the Caloosahatchee River, not directly on the open Gulf. For a full day on a long Florida beach, we would recommend Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Lovers Key, or Bonita Beach instead.

For a spontaneous afternoon or a few relaxing hours near the water, however, the short drive is a major advantage.

The Yacht Club area is still undergoing a major redevelopment. The City of Cape Coral continues to maintain the beach and currently provides temporary restroom trailers. Additional beach, pier, marina, and recreational facilities are part of ongoing or planned reconstruction.

Our Tip: Yacht Club Beach is ideal for a two- or three-hour outing. For a traditional full-day beach experience, head to the Gulf.

Fort Myers Beach

For many guests from Cape Coral, Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island is the nearest classic Gulf beach – with Times Square, restaurants and quieter Bowditch Point at the north end.

CloseFort Myers BeachGulf Beach

Fort Myers Beach / Times Square

Times Square, Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931

View Fort Myers Beach / Times Square on Google Maps

Fort Myers Beach is one of the most convenient choices for visitors who want to combine a traditional Gulf beach with restaurants and a more active beach-town atmosphere.

The Times Square area puts you in the heart of Estero Island’s visitor district.

One important update for 2026: Lynn Hall Memorial Park is currently temporarily closed for reconstruction. Its regular parking lot is therefore unavailable during the construction period. Fort Myers Beach itself remains accessible through other public beach access points, and Lee County recommends options such as Park & Ride and LeeTran.

Bowditch Point Park

50 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931

View Bowditch Point Park on Google Maps

Bowditch Point Park is located at the northern tip of Estero Island.

The approximately 17-acre park combines Gulf shoreline, back-bay scenery, and protected natural areas. Roughly ten acres are preserve or restoration habitat. Walking paths and different coastal environments make Bowditch especially attractive for wildlife viewing, photography, and quiet shoreline walks.

There is currently an important limitation: the parking lot has been closed since September 8, 2026, due to construction. Lee County states that beaches remain accessible during the rebuilding work and that public transportation may be used. Several former park facilities have also not yet been restored to their pre-Hurricane Ian condition.

Our Tip: Bowditch is currently best for visitors who are already on Fort Myers Beach or can reach the park using LeeTran.

Sanibel Island

Sanibel is especially appealing to visitors who want more than just swimming. Shelling, wildlife, long shoreline walks, and several very different public beach parks make the island one of the most varied beach destinations near Cape Coral. There is also a toll for driving across the Sanibel Causeway. The regular current rate for a two-axle vehicle is $6 with a compatible transponder or prepaid account. Pay-by-Plate currently adds a $3 administrative fee.

Sanibel Causeway Beach

Sanibel Causeway, Sanibel, FL

The Causeway Beaches are located before you reach Sanibel’s main Gulf shoreline.

They feel very different from Sanibel’s traditional Gulf beaches. Think quick water access, picnics, kayaking, and watersports rather than a long, classic beach day.

The City of Sanibel currently charges $5 per hour for parking, 24 hours a day. There are 27 designated parking spaces, restrooms, drinking water, picnic areas, and grills. Leashed dogs are allowed.

Lighthouse Beach is located on Sanibel’s eastern tip and is especially worthwhile for first-time visitors.

Along with Gulf shoreline, you’ll find the historic Sanibel Lighthouse, nature trails, and views toward San Carlos Bay.

The beach is also suitable for shelling, which the City of Sanibel specifically lists as a popular activity. Parking currently costs $5 per hour. Restrooms, outdoor showers, drinking water, and picnic areas are available. The fishing pier remains closed.

The official name is Gulfside City Beach Park, although many longtime visitors still know it as Algiers Beach.

For shell collectors, it belongs among our top three recommendations on Sanibel. The City of Sanibel specifically identifies Algiers as a good location for shell collecting. At the same time, it is family-friendly and often feels quieter than some of the island’s better-known beach parks. The park offers 46 parking spaces, restrooms, outdoor showers, drinking water, picnic areas, grills, and a covered pavilion. Parking currently costs $5 per hour.

Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park is a great alternative to Sanibel’s more famous beaches.

The public parking lot is not directly at the beach entrance. It is located approximately 0.25 miles north at 205 Tarpon Bay Road. There are 76 designated parking spaces. Parking costs $5 per hour. Restrooms, outdoor showers, drinking water, and picnic areas are available.

Bowman’s Beach is one of Sanibel’s best-known natural beaches.

From the parking area, an approximately 0.25-mile walk takes you across Clam Bayou to the Gulf. That distance from the road helps the beach feel more natural and less developed than many other public beach accesses.

For shell collectors, Bowman’s has another major advantage: the long shoreline makes it easy to walk and search over a much larger area. Parking costs $5 per hour.

Blind Pass Beach

Blind Pass Beach Park, Sanibel, FL 33957

View Blind Pass Beach on Google Maps

Blind Pass Beach sits at the northwestern end of Sanibel, directly before the bridge to Captiva.

The City of Sanibel specifically describes Blind Pass as one of the island’s top shelling locations. Fast tidal currents through the pass regularly move and deposit shells along the shoreline.

Blind Pass Beach Park is officially marked “No Swimming” because of dangerous currents in the pass. That makes Blind Pass an excellent destination for shell collecting, but not a swimming beach. Parking costs $5 per hour, and only 29 parking spaces are available. The nearest restrooms are across the bridge at Turner Beach.

Our Tip: Visit Blind Pass early for shelling, then head to Bowman’s, Algiers, or another Sanibel beach if you want to swim.

Our Top Three Shelling Beaches

  1. Blind Pass Beach – Best for focused shell hunting.
  2. Bowman’s Beach – Best for shelling + nature + long shoreline walks.
  3. Algiers Beach – Best for shelling + a relaxing full beach day.

Tarpon Bay Road Beach is our quieter alternative.

When Is the Best Time to Find Shells?

Conditions change every day.

Wind, tides, and currents determine when and where new shells wash ashore. Lower tide is often helpful because more beach is exposed.

For Sanibel, arriving early in the morning can also be worthwhile.

Important: Do Not Collect Live Animals

On Sanibel, collecting or possessing live shellfish is prohibited. This protection also includes live sand dollars, starfish, and sea urchins.

Only take clearly empty shells.

Captiva & Blind Pass

Turner Beach sits on the Captiva side of Blind Pass and is especially good for sunset. Captiva itself is most worthwhile as part of a full island day – parking is limited and comparatively expensive.

ModerateCaptivaGulf Beach

Turner Beach is located directly across Blind Pass on the Captiva side.

It is especially good as a stop on the way to Captiva and for watching the sunset. Parking costs $5 per hour, and spaces are limited. Restrooms are available. Dogs are not allowed at Turner Beach.

Currents are also a concern here. Lee County warns visitors not to swim directly near the bridge because the water quickly becomes deeper and strong undertows may occur. Conditions are generally safer farther away from the pass.

The Gulf beach is especially appealing as the final stop on a full Sanibel-and-Captiva day. The main drawback is parking. Current rates are $15 for one hour, $25 for two hours, or $40 for the full day. Restrooms are available.

Dogs are not allowed on Captiva beaches. Live shelling is also prohibited.

Ready-Made Day Trips from Cape Coral

Sanibel Family Day

Start the morning at Lighthouse Beach.

Have lunch on Sanibel.

Spend the afternoon at Algiers or Tarpon Bay Road Beach.

This lets you experience different areas of the island without spending the entire day moving from parking lot to parking lot.

Fort Myers Beach Day

Because of current construction, consider Park & Ride or LeeTran.

Visit Times Square and the beach, then continue toward Bowditch Point if it fits your plans.

Check current construction and access information before leaving Cape Coral.

Boca Grande Day Trip

Leave early for Gasparilla Island.

Spend the morning at Gasparilla Island State Park and the lighthouse.

Explore Boca Grande afterward.

Return to the beach in the afternoon.

Boca Grande deserves a full day.

Boat Day to Cayo Costa

Check weather, wind, and your route in the morning. Bring plenty of drinking water, food, and sun protection. Visit Cayo Costa during the day and leave enough time for the return trip. Boats: Cape Coral boats.

Beach Rules You Should Know

Collect Empty Shells Only

This is especially important on Sanibel.

Live shellfish may not be collected. Live sand dollars, starfish, and sea urchins are protected as well.

Protect Sea Turtles

Sanibel’s sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 through October 31.

Bright lights on the beach can disturb nesting turtles and hatchlings.

Never enter, disturb, or alter marked nesting areas.

Respect Dunes and Coastal Vegetation

Stay on designated paths and boardwalks.

Dune vegetation helps stabilize the coastline and provides habitat for wildlife.

Dog Rules Vary by Beach

  • Dog Beach: Off-leash area
  • Sanibel: Dogs allowed on leash
  • Turner Beach: No dogs
  • Captiva: No dogs
  • Lovers Key Beach: No dogs
  • Bonita Beach Park: No dogs
  • Boca Grande State Park beaches: No dogs
  • Tigertail Beach: No dogs

Never assume that the rules at one beach apply to the next one.

Use Extra Caution Near Passes

Be especially careful where large amounts of water move between islands and bays.

Blind Pass is the clearest example: excellent shelling, but swimming is prohibited.

At Turner Beach, avoid swimming directly near the bridge because of strong currents.

Parking and Tolls
